test works well only in large samples. We recommend using this test only if the user has no access to raw data. If you have the raw data, bootstrapping offers a much better alternative that imposes no distributional assumptions. (2014) mediation: R package for causal mediation analysis. <emphasis>Journal of Statistical Software</emphasis> <emphasis role="strong">59(5)</emphasis>, 1-38.  </para><para>There is also a mediate function in the psych library in R which may be downloaded and used to fit mediation models.  </para><section><title>Mediation effects</title><para>A variable may be considered a mediator to the extent to which it carries the influence of a given independent variable (IV) to a given dependent variable (DV). Generally speaking, mediation can be said to occur when (1) the IV significantly affects the mediator, (2) the IV significantly affects the DV in the absence of the mediator, (3) the mediator has a significant unique effect on the DV, and (4) the effect of the IV on the DV shrinks upon the addition of the mediator to the model. These criteria can be used to informally judge whether or not mediation is occurring, but <ulink url="https://imaging.mrc-cbu.cam.ac.uk/statswiki/FAQ/SobelTest/statswiki/MacKinnon#">MacKinnon</ulink> &amp; Dwyer (1993) and <ulink url="https://imaging.mrc-cbu.cam.ac.uk/statswiki/FAQ/SobelTest/statswiki/MacKinnon#">MacKinnon</ulink>, Warsi, &amp; Dwyer (1995) have popularized statistically based methods by which mediation may be formally assessed. </para><para><ulink url="https://imaging.mrc-cbu.cam.ac.uk/statswiki/FAQ/SobelTest/statswiki/MacKinnon#">MacKinnon</ulink>, Valente &amp; Gonzalez (2020) have suggested including an interaction term between the mediator and independent variable. Valeri &amp; <ulink url="https://imaging.mrc-cbu.cam.ac.uk/statswiki/FAQ/SobelTest/statswiki/VanderWeele#">VanderWeele</ulink> (2013) provide SAS and SPSS code to do this. </para></section><section><title>Purpose of Sobel test</title><para>To test whether a mediator carries the influence of an IV to a DV. The DV and mediator are assumed to be continuous variables. If one or more of these are dichotomous then there are scale problems in the regressions but <ulink url="https://imaging.mrc-cbu.cam.ac.uk/statswiki/FAQ/SobelTest/statswiki/MacKinnon#">MacKinnon</ulink> and Dwyer (1993) have suggested a solution when the DV or M are dichotomous which may be implemented using the preferred bootstrapping technique in SPSS <ulink url="http://www.comm.ohio-state.edu/ahayes/">here</ulink> or using an EXCEL spreadsheet to compute Sobel's test with inputs computed using SPSS <ulink url="http://nrherr.bol.ucla.edu/Mediation/logmed.html">here.</ulink> </para></section><section><title>A friendly warning</title><para>Blind use of this application without a proper understanding of mediation or the logic behind these tests will lead to erroneous conclusions. Please consult the references before proceeding. </para></section><section><title>An illustration of mediation</title><para>a, b, and c are path coefficients. Variables in parentheses are standard errors of those path coefficients. </para><para>Description of numbers needed </para><para>a = raw (unstandardized) regression coefficient for the association between IV and mediator with its square denoted by a2. </para><para>sa = standard error of a with its square (ie variance) denoted by sa2. </para><para>b = raw coefficient for the association between the mediator and the DV (when the IV is also a predictor of the DV) with its square denoted by b2.  </para><para>sb = standard error of b with its square (ie variance) denoted by sb2. </para><para>To get these numbers </para><orderedlist numeration="arabic"><listitem><para>Run a regression analysis with the IV predicting the mediator. Note that sa and sb should never be negative. </para></listitem></orderedlist></section><section><title>To conduct the Sobel test</title><para>Details can be found in Baron and Kenny (1986), Sobel (1982), Goodman (1960), and <ulink url="https://imaging.mrc-cbu.cam.ac.uk/statswiki/FAQ/SobelTest/statswiki/MacKinnon#">MacKinnon</ulink>, Warsi, and Dwyer (1995). An on-line calculator for the Sobel Test is <ulink url="http://www.danielsoper.com/statcalc/calc31.aspx">here.</ulink>  We should note that there are three principal versions of the &quot;Sobel test&quot; - one that adds the third denominator term (Aroian, 1944/1947 - this is the version popularized by Baron &amp; Kenny as the Sobel test), one that subtracts it (Goodman, 1960), and one that does not include it at all. The Aroian and Goodman may be computed <ulink url="http://www.psych.ku.edu/preacher/sobel/sobel.htm">here.</ulink> We stress that researchers should consult <ulink url="https://imaging.mrc-cbu.cam.ac.uk/statswiki/FAQ/SobelTest/statswiki/MacKinnon#">MacKinnon</ulink>, Lockwood, Hoffman, West, and Sheets (2002), as well as sources cited therein, before attempting to interpret the results of any of these tests. We recommend using the Aroian version of the Sobel test suggested in Baron and Kenny (1986) because it does not make the unnecessary assumption that the product of sa and sb is vanishingly small. The Goodman version of the test subtracts the third term for an unbiased estimate of the variance of the mediated effect, but this can sometimes have the unfortunate effect of yielding a negative variance estimate. </para><para>The Sobel test and the Aroian test seemed to perform best in a Monte Carlo study (<ulink url="https://imaging.mrc-cbu.cam.ac.uk/statswiki/FAQ/SobelTest/statswiki/MacKinnon#">MacKinnon</ulink>, Warsi, &amp; Dwyer, 1995), and converge closely with sample sizes greater than 50 or so. An overview of mediation analysis is given by <ulink url="https://imaging.mrc-cbu.cam.ac.uk/statswiki/FAQ/SobelTest/statswiki/MacKinnon#">MacKinnon</ulink> (2008).
