Defining SMA
How to define SMA on anatomy. Think this is wrong? Let MatthewBrett know.
This text and pictures stolen with gratitude from Sam Burnand and Rich Armstrong.
The pre-SMA and SMA proper were defined with the following boundaries (Picard and Strick, 2001).
- Inferior border: Cingulate sulcus
- Superior border: Medial fold of cortex
All following vertical borders are perpendicular to the AC-PC line; the line joining anterior and posterior commissures.
- Anterior border: anterior border of the genu of the corpus callosum
- Posterior border: posterior commissure
Separation into pre-SMA and SMA proper (pre-SMA is anterior): anterior commissure
